What is ear odor? Most people are familiar with ear odor and dogs, however they may not know these facts. Ear odor is referred to as otitis external and affects up to 20% of the dog population. The odor is the first thing that is usually observed when there is an infection in the ear canal. Some of the causes may include: bacteria, yeast, and parasites. They not only smell horrible, but are may be painful.
What Causes Ear Odor? Ear infections have a yellow or brown waxy discharge that accompany the bad smell. This may be the result of an overgrowth of Malassesia pachydermatis (yeast) that may be found in ear canals of healthy dogs. Bacterial infections sometimes occur secondarily after allergies and other health problems. The problem occurs when the ear environment changes and the change results in a perfect environment for yeast and bacteria to thrive.
Effects of an Untreated Ear Infection. If an ear infection is left untreated, it can cause more serious concerns, as it moves into the middle and inner ear, the result of this movement is that the dog's equilibrium balance system and vital nerve structures are affected. If left untreated while in the external ear canal, over time the ear tissue of the external ear will become extremely cauliflower-like and thickened, which will begin to obstruct the exterior ear canal.
